How Often Should Fire Extinguishers Be Serviced in Jamaica?

A fire extinguisher that has lost pressure or has a blocked nozzle is no help in an emergency. Regular servicing keeps it ready to work and keeps your business ready for a Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) inspection.

Monthly: quick visual check (you can do this)

  • The pressure gauge needle is in the green zone.
  • The safety pin and tamper seal are in place.
  • No dents, rust, leaks or a cracked hose.
  • The extinguisher is mounted, visible and not blocked by stock or furniture.
  • The service tag is present and up to date.

Every 12 months: professional servicing

International practice (NFPA 10), which inspectors in Jamaica commonly follow, calls for every extinguisher to be serviced by a qualified technician at least once a year. The technician checks the weight, pressure, valve, hose and contents, then attaches a dated service tag.

Businesses usually need current service tags on all extinguishers before the JFB will issue or renew a fire certificate.

Refills: after every use

Any discharge — even a short squeeze — means the extinguisher must be refilled. Partly used units lose pressure quickly and may fail the next time you need them.

Pressure (hydrostatic) testing

  • CO2, water and wet chemical extinguishers: every 5 years.
  • Dry chemical (ABC) extinguishers: every 12 years, with an internal maintenance check every 6 years.

Jamaica's climate matters

Heat, humidity and salt air near the coast speed up corrosion. Extinguishers in kitchens, garages, boats and seaside properties should be checked more often than once a month.

Common questions

Can I service my own extinguisher?
You can do the monthly visual check, but the annual service, refill and pressure testing should be done by a qualified technician so the tag is valid for inspections.
How long does a fire extinguisher last?
Well-maintained extinguishers can last many years. A unit that is corroded, damaged or fails a pressure test must be replaced.
