How to Use a Fire Extinguisher: The PASS Method
In an emergency you have seconds to act. Learning these four steps now means you won't freeze when it matters.
First: should you fight the fire?
- Only if the fire is small (no bigger than a waste bin) and not spreading.
- Only if you have a clear exit behind you.
- Only if the room is not filling with smoke.
- Always raise the alarm and call 911 or the fire brigade at 110 first.
The PASS method
- P — Pull the pin. This breaks the tamper seal.
- A — Aim low, at the base of the fire, not at the flames.
- S — Squeeze the handle slowly and evenly.
- S — Sweep from side to side across the base until the fire is out.
Stay safe
Stand about 2–3 metres back. Most small extinguishers empty in 10–20 seconds. If the fire is not going out, leave immediately and close the door behind you.
Watch the area after the fire seems out — it can reignite. Have the extinguisher refilled straight away.
